From the book:Visitors to the new installation of Egyptian antiquities in the Lila Acheson Wallace Galleries of The Metropolitan Museum of Art confront a vast array of objects from the Nile Valley. The entire collection covers a span of time from the Paleolithic Period about 300,000 B.C. to the Roman-Byzantine Period 31 B.C. to 641 A.D. The Dynastic Period, to which the heart of the collection belongs, lasted more than 3,000 years, about 3100 B.C. to 332 B.C. In order to make the Egyptian collection more comprehensible to the public, the objects are organized chronologically, and this time line is provided as an overall guide. It begins with the prehistoric periods, the Paleolithic and the Neolithic; starting with the Predynastic Period, about 4300- 3200 B.C., it proceeds century by century. For each time period a characteristic object is illustrated and accompanied by a short text outlining important historical and cultural developments. Also, examples of objects from contemporary non- Egyptian cultures are included. Al- though many monuments and artifacts featured in the time line belong to the Egyptian collection of this Museum, some objects of Egyptian civilization in other museums are also included.
