Although the printer accredited this work to Didymus the Blind, the manuscript the work was printed from was devoid of an authorship claim and since this printing the authorship has been in contention (more so, recently).Printed in Greek and parallel text, also with one engraved example of the manuscript.At the rear of the volume are other works and quotes attributed to Didymus the Blind.This copy was owned and annotated in by a 19th century Oriel College, Oxford, scholar, author and clergyman William Burgon, whose ownership inscription is found on the flyleaf.About Didymus the Blind -Didymus the Blind (alternatively spelled Dedimus or Didymous) (c. 313 – 398) was a Christian theologian in the Church of Alexandria, where he taught for about half a century. He was a student of Origen, and, after the Second Council of Constantinople condemned Origen, Didymus's works were not copied. Many of his writings are lost, but some of his commentaries and essays survive.Bibliographic Details -Worldcat OCLC numbers 43192384 and 1203403123, among others. Not rare, among those two catalogue entries twelve copies are found in the world's libraries.Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 39.5 x 26 x 4 cm. Folio. Vellum binding reinforced with leather and spine and corners (but see condition notes). Spine with author and title in gilt on red leather, and year written in an old hand. All edges red.Pages - LXIV, 520 Collation - a-k4, A-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Lll4, Mmm-Zzz2, Aaaa-Dddd2 Condition - See pictures. Corners and spine previously repaired with leather, but an old repair and now those are worn/cracked. Front joint entirely cracked, front board held on by bands and inner hinge. Some darkening to vellum. Rear joint starting at top and bottom. Spine with various remnants of labels. Bookseller and previous owner notes to pastedown and flyleaf. Some toning to paper. Occasional fox spots, dog eared page, page edge tear, etc. Annotated throughout with scriptural passage references. First 8 leaves has small moisture mark just at bottom corner. a2 and b1 with some graphite notes in bottom margin. Nice wide margins. e4 with ink smudge. G3, Z4, Ff, Eee3 tear from edges . Tear at Ff4 with repair at bottom. Ccc4 torn almost halfway, with rudimentary repair. Some darkening to last leaf and more foxing and ink smudges. Sevearal small worm tracks at rear.
