Description: Hello and thank you taking a look. I will be offering a number of pieces from my personal collection that I have acquired over the course of forty years as an art enthusiast. I've always felt that we never truly own art, we are simply temporary caretakers - and it is now time to pay forward my collection to the next group of art enthusiasts. Please feel free to ask questions, I am an advocate of education in all elements of collecting and the more knowledgeable you are about your purchase, the happier you will be. 1938 - Later that year, Edie (Edith Ann Hamlin) and Maynard (Lafayette Maynard Dixon) would return to Arizona when Dixon's health began deteriorating more quickly, and the dry desert air would be seen as a way to preserve his increasingly precarious health, eventually settling for the long haul in Tucson, Arizona in 1939. But when this drawing was done in New York City in the spring of 1938, the couple were still in the fresh glow of being newlyweds. Maynard held closely to his love of The Big Apple that began during his first marriage and the tonalist revolution when he was a significant figure there in the artistic community (New York Society of Illustrator's -1911). And for Edith it was a far journey from California, but still familiar to her from her time at Columbia's Teacher College. She was still artistically charged with the recent success of the Coit Tower mural project & the San Francisco's Mission High School mural work. What we have here is a small, but historically significant sketchbook portrait done by Edith Hamlin of her husband Maynard Dixon - completed a full two years prior to her "Maynard Dixon, Painter of the Desert" masterpiece. Paper size is approximately 7.25 x 9.5 inches. When Hamlin sold these in Central Park in 1938, she hand-cut mats for around the pictures and then taped them in place within that frame construction. This one was subsequently removed from the frame and now has a ragged edge on the top of the paper. See various images for close-ups. Again, a small, but very important drawing from one of the Titans of the WPA era. Please take a moment to check out my other auctions for more outstanding Depression-era women artists, as well as several other Spring 1938 works from Edith A. Hamlin. I have included an image of the completed "Maynard Dixon, Painter of the Desert", as a comparison for the sketch I am offering. You ARE NOT buying "Painter of the Desert", it is only here to illustrate her style of approach in regard to images of her husband. I cannot call my sketch a study for the later painting, as a full 2 years would pass before it's completion, and this original lacks that classic cowboy hat - but Edith's fascination for the lean features and haunted eyes of her husband's angular face are already evident. I have also included an image of Edith's signature from another painting, as she did not sign the sketches in this sketchbook with her full name, only her first name. The ONLY piece of art you are bidding on is the 1938 portrait of her husband, not the examples, which are only shown for educational purposes. I ship 1st Class, Insured, Signature Confirmation, and I handle the costs of that, so it is one less item to worry about. After 25 years on eBay, I know how to get it there safely and want you to move forward confident that you will receive exactly what you purchased in the condition it appears in, in the images provided.
