Description: In this charming and delightful early Victorian embroidered work, our very young needleworker, Susannah, was only 8 years old when she accomplished it. In spite of her youth and limited experience, she put forth a remarkable cross stitch sampler. She laid out her alphabet carefully, choosing to start with all capital letters, followed by the alphabet in lower case. However, due to her young age, she made several errors, which only add considerable charm to the sampler. She also embroidered the alphabet in fancier, script-like letters following her upper- and lower-case letters and her numbers. The script alphabet ended on her fifth row, leaving a fairly large space at the end. To our delight, she filled this in with a large dog. After exhausting the alphabet with still another row of letters in smaller lower case, with a few omissions, she placed her name and age in the middle of the sampler. It reads: “Susannah Patchett’s work Aged 8 years.”There is a small spiritual verse following, divided by a scrolling decorative insert of red strawberries and blue flowers. This design surrounds the verse. Below this verse, she placed the words and date, “Anno Domini 1840.”At the bottom of her sampler, Susannah chose a series of traditional motifs to fill in the space. The largest of these, a basket of pink and green fruits with two small birds perched upon it, is centered here. She finished the sampler with a scrolling strawberry border on three sides. One of the strongest characteristics of the sampler is its fabulous hand-carved frame in which it was placed at an early date. I believe this large and well-carved framed to be the original. I have added a small gold fillet only to separate the glass from the surface of the sampler. The hand-carved frame is magnificent and brings this enchanting embroidery to another level. Perhaps the girl’s father carved the frame for his daughter to show how much he valued her work. The wood has deepened to a rich, brown color with a very soft patina. The condition of the sampler is very good for its age of 184 years. There is some degree of expected fading. The background linen has age toned. Some of the embroidered stitches are missing here and there. However, the overall appearance of the sampler is still pleasurable. The condition of the frame is excellent. It measures 22-½ inches wide by 20-½ inches high, including the frame. Personal and cashier’s checks also accepted.
