Description: PRICE REDUCED!!! This listing is for a Gibson Super 400-CES guitar. I had originally listed it as a 1964 model. I arrived at the year by checking the serial number on two different search sites, Reverb.com serial number database and Guitar Dater Project website. Both listed it as a 1964 model. After I listed the guitar I heard from an E-Bay member who pointed out several things that suggest it is not a 1964 model. I discovered after a hell of a lot of further research that Gibson duplicated serial numbers during this time. In fact they could have use some numbers as many as four times. Lots of reasons. I learned that if "MADE IN USA'' was stamped on the back of the headstock just below the serial number it indicates the guitar was made between 1970 and 1975. If the 6 digit number begins with the number 1 and this is the case with this guitar, it was made between 1970 and 1975. I looked at several other listings where the guitar was specifically listed as a particular year and found that there was usually a picture of the back of a pickup with the date of manufacture on it. I took the guitar back to The Guitar Center and the Tech pulled a pickup out and there is no date. The Tech said he didn't recall seeing dates on the back of the older pickups. The pickup has a T on it which the Tech indicated it was from the period we believe it is from as, he said, Gibson stopped the T on the pickup a few years later that the early 70's. So I am listing the guitar as an early 1970's model. It appears there is no way to narrow it down further. It was further pointed out that a picture I posted of a sticker inside the guitar was definitely from the 1970's. Here are some further information about this guitar. This guitar belonged to my brother. Unfortunately he passed away 18 years ago and he left it to me. It has been in its case for the past 18 years and now that I am well into my senior years I felt it is time to let someone else who either plays, collects or invests have this great guitar. For the past month I have had this guitar worked on by The Guitar Centers Guitar Repair Tech here in Las Vegas. After talking with him for awhile he let me know that he has a great deal of experience working on vintage guitars and I felt comfortable giving him the job of completely working over this guitar. And he did an amazing job. It cleaned up nicely and its ready to play. (Had a lot of people drooling at the store). All of the knobs, switches and pickups work as they should. I don't want to misrepresent in anyway the condition of the guitar. The first and most obvious thing is the pickup covers have been removed and they were included in the case. As you can see in pictures 18 and 19 the covers are in bad condition. I agreed with the Tech they shouldn't be put back on. I felt the pickguard was not original but Tech said he believed it was original. Not sure what its made of but I can tell you it is VERY brittle. The pickguard needed to be removed in order to see the back of the pickup. It cracked a little more so we agreed to not replace the pickguard on the guitar but have included a picture of it pictures 18 and 19. The tech did a little reinforcement on the back side of the pickguard but he made it clear it is very brittle. He also informed me he thought all of the rest of the guitar is original including the pickups, tuners, tail piece and hardware. The pickup by the bridge was not working so the Tech had it re-wound to Gibson's specs. Also the case is original but the handle has been replaced. I had a shoe/luggage repair shop repair some torn tolex and clean up some stains on the case. They did a great job. But as should be expected it shows some wear for a case this old. Let me be clear, the guitar cleaned up really well. It is around 50 years old. There are some minor scratches and a chip on the headstock, picture 17. The hardware was cleaned as best as possible. There was a good deal of grime and corrosion on most of the hardware pieces but again a lot of effort was put into leaning it up. Cost several hundred dollars to have this done. I feel that I should have more to say but I will leave it up to you viewers if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thanks for looking. Sorry, I no longer ship internationally.
