Description: A very good and rare copy of the first Egoist Press edition of James Joyce's Dubliners, London 1922. Joyce's collection of short stories of early 20th century Dublin life which successive publishers declined to publish for some years before their first publication by Grant Richards in 1914. Original black cloth-covered boards, gilt titling to spine; 8vo, pp. 288. Boards have remarkably little wear for their age - mild signs of handling, a little scuffing, a little bumping to head and foot of spine and corners; gilding remains bright. End-papers are clean, no inscriptions but with offsetting. Page-block remains clean and bright throughout, a few isolated spots of foxing; spine split showing webbing at the title page. Volume printed in the USA: 1000 sets of sheets were imported by Egoist Press, some then sold under their own covers and some 500 onsold to Jonathan Cape. This is one of the Cape examples, Jonathan Cape in gilt at foot of spine, Cape logo blind-stamped to the rear board. Binding a little shaken but all holding well. Please view photographs for fuller clarity as to condition; additional photos by request.
