Schildhauer spent working with the Do X, the largest, most powerful flying boat when it was produced by Dornier in Germany in 1929. An experienced Naval Aviator with the U.S. Navy, with experience with seaplanes and flyingboats, he joined the Dornier Company to work with the Do X. The Do X was undergoing flight tests preparing for its flight to the U.S., to demonstrate the place of the flying ship in overseas transportation. This was to be manufactured by General Motors in the U.S. but in 1931 General Motors decided to give up its interest in manufacturing transport aircraft.
