His second play, London Assurance (1841), foreshadowed the modernsocial drama. It was a big success and was frequently produced into the 20th century. Other playsincluded Shaughraun (1874) and an adaption of Washington Irving's Rip van Winkle (1866) for theAmerican comedian Joseph Jefferson.
