GOVERNOR DEWITT CLINTON - LAND GRANT SIGNED 04/13/1822 - HFSID 43711 DeWITT CLINTON. Partly Printed DS: "DeWitt Clinton" as Governor of New York, 1p, 17x14. Albany, 1822 April 13. Countersigned: "Archd Campbell Dep. Secretary" and "Saml A. Talcott Atty Genl". Grant to Samuel Sidney Breese of 210 acres "situate in the county of Madison and distinguished as Lots Number Three and eight of the unappropriated lands lying in that part of the Late Oneida Reservation which lied between the Two Mile Strip so called and the Chittenengo Creek South of the Genesee Turnpike road...." In 1802, the State of New York purchased land comprising 46 lots from the Oneida Indians. This purchase was bounded on the west by the "Two-Mile Strip" purchased in 1798, on the north by the "Seneca Turnpike Lots" also purchased in 1798 and on the east by the Oneida Indian reservation. The present township of Smithfield and Fenner adjoined the "Purchase of 1802" on the south. DeWitt Clinton, unsuccessful Federalist candidate for President in 1812 against Madison, was U.S. Senator (1802-1803), Mayor of New York City (1803-1807, 1810, 1811, 1813, 1814) and Governor of New York (1817-1821, 1825-1828). Fragile. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical folds touch the first "n" in Clinton and the "A." in Talcott's signature. 5 pinhead-size holes at blank cross folds, nicked at upper blank edge at folds.
