Derek trained at Manchester college of Art between 1944-47 and Burnley School of Art from 1959-61. He combined a successful lecturing career with the making of his own work. Derek represented Great Britain at the International Academy of Ceramics Exhibition, Geneva in 1965. He has work in international and private collections which includes the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. By 1980 he retired from lecturing to focus on making work as a full-time potter.Derek is particularly remembered for making high fired glazed bottles and bowls which often included exquisite brush decoration. He also perfected the art of making finely turned translucent porcelain and cut sided bottles. His work today is mainly found at auction houses rather than on display for sale in galleries.Derek is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association.
