These books are designed to promote curiosity about the future, discussion between adults and children about the challenges we may face, and encourage work towards creating the future we want. I strived to create balance between children’s familiar ideas of a fun and exciting future with some of the concerns of the real world. I also wanted to encourage playfulness, ambition and provide an underlying foundation of prevailing hope. More about me and the origin of this book: “Mummy, what does the future hold?” and “Daddy, what does the future hold?” are a passion project first conceived in 2016 during studies at Swinburne University, while attaining a Master’s degree in Strategic Foresight. This intense course identified significant evidence for the need to urgently transition to renewable energy if civilisation is to thrive in the long term, among many other challenges we are facing in the coming decades. The many topics studied often dealt with difficult and complex topics (i.e. wicked problems), but it was also enlightening and inspiring. In essence, equipping ourselves with new knowledge and ideas drives action to improve our current situation and our possible futures. The most memorable advice was to “start where you are, use what you have and do what you can”, so I did. May we all live long and prosper. Dennis Bilic
