Description: DESCRIPTION: CARNIVAL #01 This will stop you in your tracks and is one of our most prized crinum. It has a white trumpet with random, and often heavy, white streaking in the flowers, sometimes as much as half of the flower. Most of the flowers have now stabilized to a medium pink. This trait is called a chimera. We do have several bulbs now that bloom in a light pink, so we feel that these are still somewhat unstable. You never know, sometimes new variations just happen even if new, offset bulbs (not seedlings). This is a very, very rare hybrid and quantities are very limited. The smaller offsets do not transplant well, so we try to leave them attached for several years before removing them at a more medium size. This is our first introduction of this bulb to the public in 2018. Only a handful of specialized crinum collectors have this extremely rare hybrid. This would be considered a large-size plant. The flowers open several at a time, sequentially making it a very attractive bloom. It will slowly form new, offset bulbs on a regular basis once the bulb is mature, producing maybe 1-2 new bulbs every year. It has never produced any seed for us. We have observed 16 flowers on 28" tall scapes. The last time we moved the mother bulb, it was 5+" in diameter. We have recorded blooms from March-June. These do very well here in zone 9. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: CARNIVAL #01 [C. bulbispermum 'Orange River Form' x (C. scabrum x bulbispermum)] (hybridizer, Dr. Thad Howard. 1984) This rare hybrid is what is called a backcross, a hybrid, in this case a herbertii type scabrum x bulbispermum where its pollen was crossed back on a bulbispermum as a seed parent. Supposedly there were 5 seeds from the original cross, and all of the plants exhibit somewhat different characteristics. Unfortunately, these different bulbs were all distributed under the same name. We think we now have 4 of these types in our collection that we have obtained from different sources. It has not been very widely distributed except to advanced collectors, so this is probably its first introduction to the general public. We obtained our bulb in 2007 from from another advanced, crinum collector and are just now able to introduce some of these for sale. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: This is most likely more hardy than most crinum because is has bulbispermum, the most cold-hardy crinum in its parentage. It does well here in northeast Florida, zone 9, but we do not think it would survive outside below zone 6, and know it does well in zone 7+. This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils (but prefers rich soil). In zone 6 or below we would recommend planting it in a pot and protecting it from freezing in the winter. You can just let the pot go dry and start watering again in the spring after it is placed outside again. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for extended periods if allowed to dry. They prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK. They will also make excellent, container plants. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a large blooming-size bulb at least 4 years old and about 2-3" in diameter which should bloom in about 1-2 years. They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
