Description: Handwritten CONFEDERATE Civil War Diary of Pvt. John G. McCall, 22nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company B, "McDowell Rifles". Soft leather cover, measuring 8" x 3". Signed by McCall on the second page, where he notes having purchased the diary in 1861. There are approximately 26 pages with handwritten entries and notes. Some of those pages are completely filled and some are only partially filled. At first he appears to have used the book to record transactions with other soldiers in trade or payment, etc. The second half is where it becomes a diary with notes on movements, weather, casualties, battles and more. An exceptionally rare, and unrecorded Confederate diary, which are scarce on the market. At some point, when flipped over and opened in the opposite direction it was used as a ledger for someone else for a period of time after the war. This diary came from a collection/archive from another soldier in the same regiment, so it is assumed that soldier saved this from his friend and kept it, since McCall died of disease near Richmond in July 1862. John G. McCall resided in McDowell County, NC where he enlisted at age 21 on May 8, 1861. Please feel free to ask any questions.
