After WW1 gun companies like Colt and Winchester were competing with a surplus of firearms and ammo and decided to expand into other businesses. Winchester expanded into hardware and other sporting goods to survive whereas Colt went into the electrical business making fuses, fuse boxes and other electrical goods.
