Description: This listing is for a Colorful 1950s Modernist Mexican Painted Circle Skirt Size S. This lovely skirt is beautifully hand painted in shades of yellow, pink, green, turquoise, purple, and black. It has a very Modernist design to it. The painted circle skirt, which gets its name from its full circle of fabric, became popular in America after the fabric restrictions imposed by World War II were lifted. The circle skirt takes approximately four yards of fabric to make; much more fabric than the 1940s straight pencil skirt required. The silhouette is considered American, but the embellishment techniques were all Mexican ingenuity. They were elaborately decorated with sequins, hand painting, embroidery, and appliques. This labor-intensive practice led the skirts to become a unique fashion entity. In order to hand-paint border scenes such as large floral patterns, cityscapes, and even tell a legend, many were laid out flat on a wooden wheel. The wheel was turned as the artist painted around the skirt (see last photo). After the painting was completed, (and some skirts were signed by the artist), sequins were hand-sewn onto the skirts. The skirts were typically 100% cotton and reflected vibrant Mexican culture. Architecture, nature, historic Mexican art and people were all considered themes. The circle skirts were originally made as souvenirs for tourists who wanted to take something of the Mexican way of life back home with them. This particular skirt was signed by the artist, "Adela". It is very rare to find the artist signature on these skirts. The signature is faded but still readable. These skirts typically have 2 ties - a shorter tie that wraps around the waist from back to front, and a longer tie that wraps from front to back and is tied in the back. The shorter waist tie can be tied, hooked or snapped. In this case, a button was added to the ties. You will probably need to move this button to perfectly fit your own waist, or you can just tie them. These skirts can be worn with just about any type of top. They also look spectacular with vintage Mexican Embroidered Tourist Jackets. This particular jacket, shown, is for sale on my site in a separate listing. Vintage inlaid Mexican necklace is not included. Please check measurements, below, to ensure a proper fit as this skirt is not returnable.
