Author Biography Johannes Itten, geb. 1888 in Su¿deren-Linden, Schweiz, gest. 1967 in Zu¿rich, war ein Schweizer Maler, Kunstpädagoge und Kunsttheoretiker. Nach einer Ausbildung zum Sekundarlehrer fu¿r Physik, Mathematik und Chemie studierte er an der Kunstakademie in Genf. Anschliessend zog er nach Stuttgart, wo er mit dem Hölzel-Kreis in Beru¿hrung kam und sich erstmals mit Hölzels Farb- und Farbkonstrastlehre befasste. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs zog er nach Wien, wo er eine eigene Kunstschule gru¿ndete und Walter Gropius kennenlernte, der ihn ans Bauhaus nach Weimar berief. 1923 kehrte er zuru¿ck nach Zu¿rich und wurde 1938 Direktor der Kunstgewerbeschule Zu¿rich.
