Carpet was made in the beginning of 2010s in Gumdag village, in the western Balkan province of Turkmenistan, in Central Asia. All Turkmen carpets share certain common features. The raw material used for Turkmen carpet is pure natural silk or strong, elastic, pure-wool yarn. The production technique of Turkmen carpets and carpet products remained unchanged over thousands of years. The carpet knots are tied in each pair of base yarns. After tying of each row of pile knots one or two weft threads are laid along the full width, which are used for attachment of pile knots in base yarns. Then the pile surface is evenly trimmed and both ends are finished with fringe. Generally average carpet pitch, depends on type of the carpet and may vary from 122 to 340 thousand knots in each square meter. Ornaments of Turkmen carpets have distinct and clear geometric lines and rich colouring where shades of red colour prevail. Most widespread carpets belong to and originate from teke, yomud and ersary tribes. Basic patterns (gol) are bordered by edging, whose small scale patterns differ from the patterns in the centre of the carpet. In the East from long ago, home décor items from wool have been very popular. The presence of wool in the house is believed to make the owners happy and lucky. The peoples of the Karakum believed that sheep and camel wool hair detoxifies the body and provides the rejuvenating effect to the skin and making it firmer and softer thus, it cures various types of arthritis and neuritis, osteochondrosis and rheumatism. They have traditionally used this to reduce the effects of arthritis, because sheep wool is rich for lanolin content (wool fat), which is easily absorbed in the skin and has healing effects on the body.
