Despite initial successes, the insurgents were unable to maintain their positions in the face of overwhelming German forces and the lack of sufficient external help. After 63 days of extremely devastating and fierce fighting, the uprising was suppressed. About 16,000 insurgents and about 150-200,000 civilians died, and the city was almost completely destroyed.
