Description: Circa 1974 PRIMO BEER Empty Steel Can12oz Label HistoryIn 1974, The Hawaii Brewing Co. started a "comeback campaign" for Primo Beer, which included a new brewhouse facility in Aiea, O'ahu (near Pearl Harbor), and smart new labels in blue, white and gold on 12oz steel cans and 12oz bottles. (see news article 2nd to last pic). Cans with this label will either have a 1974 or 1975 date stamped on the can. Documented AdvertisingThe new look (and taste) was announced in local Hawaii newspapers in late 1974. The cans with this label appeared in newspaper ads through January 1976. Item DetailsThis can was "Brewed by HAWAII BREWING COMPANY, Division of Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96701." The can states "Carefully brewed with genuine barley malt, select hops, cereal grains, pure culture yeast and pure Hawaiian water". These empty cans are stamped 1974 and they have the pull-tab intact, drained from bottom. 12oz can: Grade: VERY GOODThe can you receive may not be the identical one pictured, but it will be of similar or higher grade. Primo Beer HistoryAlfred Hocking, who represented Maui in the Senate of the Republic of Hawai'i, established the Honolulu Brewing and Malting Company in 1898, hired a New York architect to build the original brewery building located on Queen Street in Kaka'ako in 1900 (it's still standing) and brewed the first batch of what would be later named "Primo Beer" on February 15, 1901. Primo Beer was the first "American" beer produced in Hawai'i after the annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom resulted in a new U.S. Territory of Hawai'i. Since the original Honolulu Brewing and Malting Company, there have been four other owners of the Primo Beer brand (Hawai'i Brewing Corp 1934-1963, Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. 1964-1981, Stroh Brewing Company 1982-1997, and Pabst Brewing Company 2007-2019). Primo Beer was also the first USA brewery to produce beer in aluminum cans (1958-1959).
