Description: The painting is untouched condition and is signed on the bottom and dated 1881. The painting because of his age is a bit dirty and I’m certain with a professional restoration it would clean up nicely. I personally think it is ready to hang as is. There is an old frame shop label on the back of the piece and with a quick Google search nothing turned up so it most likely went out of business decades ago. At first I thought it might’ve been a newer frame, but after looking closely and seeing the buildup on it, it could possibly be original to the piece, but I am not certain? There is quite a bit going on in the painting and I’ve looked it over several times and I am not able to see any paint loss. It is quite a large piece measuring approximately 34 1/2 x 42” framed, and the viewable image size is approximately 28 1/2 x 35 1/2” . I was not able to find any writing on the back so I am not certain of the title? If you look closely in some areas, it does have some Craquelure however the paint seems to be stable. Christopher High Shearer (1846–1926) was a prolific American painter in Berks County, Pennsylvania, known primarily for his large landscape paintings. Thanks for your interest.
