Description: At age 12, ALBERT PICK JR. (July 2, 1895-December 11, 1975) began doing odd jobs at his father’s company, Albert Pick & Co., a prosperous hotel and restaurant supply company, located in Chicago, IL. By 15, he familiarized himself with the intricacies of business and was selling part-time for the firm. His passion for the firm was strong, causing him to work 12 hours a day. His father struggled through the Great Depression, following in involuntary bankruptcy filed against him in 1933. It fell to Albert Jr. to purchase and manage the various hotels they were adding to their real estate holdings. Albert Jr. ultimately served as treasurer, director, president and chairman of the board of Pick Hotels Corporation. Beginning in the 1940s, his time was increasingly spent in philanthropic endeavors, including children’s hospital and People to People, an international organization founded by President Eisenhower to enhance cross-cultural communication across communities and nations. Eisenhower appointed Pick as director in 1967. In 1972, Pick was honored with the Eisenhower Medallion for his years of service to People to People. One-page, 8 ½ x 11, TLS, June 16, 1955, to Walter Jackson of Maplewood, NJ, in part, “Undoubtedly your travels do bring you to Chicago occasionally, and the next time you are here I hope I will be in town and that we may have a visit. “Am interested to know that your father plans to be in Chicago about July 7 or 8...Mrs. Pick and I do hope to have the opportunity of seeing your dad whom we remember so well, and favorably. If you, or he, will write me advising just when he will be in Chicago I would like to reserve a room for him at our Congress Hotel with my compliments...” Toning, folds.
