The Shawnee Pottery in Zanesville Ohio was established in 1937 and was in production until 1961. The company was named after the rich Shawnee Indian history found in the area of Zanesville. Louise Bauer, their in-house designer also drew inspiration from that history. Most of the production was aimed at the average American family and sold through outlets such as Woolworths. The company also held contracts with the Army Air Force. The Smiley the Pig cookie jar was first made by the Shawnee Pottery in around 1942. The earliest ones, such as this one, had very little decoration. It has a rich creamy glazed body with cold painted detail. The bottom is marked U.S.A.
