Description: Raku-Fired Ceramics The ancient Japanese process of Raku inspired me. Through my use of glaze colors, design application and controlled firing, I developed my own style and technique. My glaze design is carefully painted on each form. Fired in a kiln to 1800°, the piece is immediately removed from the hot chamber. This causes a thermal shock, producing "crackles" in the glaze surface. The piece is promptly placed in a metal can filled with paper, causing the paper to ignite. The surrounding smoke is absorbed into the crackles, leaving a black webbed surface over the design and adding more surface dimension. The dynamics of my work is in a constant flux, which is apparent in the ever-changing designs and shapes of my pottery. Raku-ware is porous, due to the unique process. Place a container inside the piece to hold water. This will protect it for many years of enjoyment. Beautiful decoration
