The US Army Air Force 362nd Fighter Squadron was established in December 1942 at Hamilton Field, California flying the P-39 Aircobra and later the P-51 Mustang. In May 1946, the squadron was re-designated the 162nd Fighter Squadron and became part of the Ohio National Guard at Cox-Dayton Municipal Airport, Ohio. The squadron transitioned through the F-84 Thunderjet to the F-100 Super Sabre and began flying the A-7D Corsair II in 1978. After 15 years with the A-7, the squadron transitioned once more to the F-16 Fighting Falcon in 1993 which it continued flying until 2010 when it traded these for the unmanned MQ-1 Predator. Vought A-7E Corsair II Designed as a longer-range, higher-payload replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk, the A-7 Corsair II was first flown on September 27th, 1965. This aircraft entered service during the Vietnam war and later became one of only a few US Navy aircraft to serve with the US Air Force. It possessed cutting edge technologies; it was one of the first aircraft to use a turbofan engine, an internal navigation system and a "head-up" display. Late in its career, A-7s were used for pilot training and were parked outside of hangars in order to draw the attention of Soviet spy satellites away from the fledgling F-117.
