Description: "Editor's Copy" Covers of Century Magazine from 1894-1905. 71 Issues, all listed below with some descriptions where relevant. Acquired from the former estate of R. W. Gilder, additional letter of provenance authentication may be possible. R. W. Gilder was the editor of Century Magazine from 1881-1909 and has been described as the "literary arbiter" of his time. The covers are contained in the editor's original Century binding as a loose folio. Many have both the front and back sheets and others only the front cover. Most likely these are the final versions rather than proof copies, but there are a few that appear to say "Work" at top (shown). The way they are folded only once along the spine also suggests they were part of the publication and printing process, rather than being taken from bound, assembled finished copies. Additionally, there is a signature at the beginning of a section in the folio that is likely to be his. Condition of the covers themselves is very good. There is a lot of chipping in the collection around the edges, but they are relatively small and not affecting the covers too much. A small portion have slightly folded corners and such, but almost all of the covers are in overall excellent condition. Binder itself is in acceptable condition and coming up on spine with webbing showing on hinges, but is still holding well and somewhat strong. The list below is comprehensive and is presented in the order the covers appear in the binder, for whatever reason they were found in this order (if you are considering buying, it would be recommended to cut and paste it for your records). It appears to be the majority of issues in the time period from late 1894 to early 1905. Shipped insured, signature required.
