The libretto is by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée, first published in 1845,itself possibly influenced by the narrative poem The Gypsies (1824) by Alexander Pushkin. The story is set in Seville, Spain in 1830, and concerns the eponymous Carmen, a beautiful Gypsy with a fiery temper. Free with her love, she woos the corporal Don José, an inexperienced soldier. Their relationship leads to his rejection of his former love, mutiny against his superior, and joining a gang of smugglers. His jealousy when she turns from him to the bullfighter Escamillo leads him to violence. ---------- About the Illustrator---------- René Bull (1872 – 1942) is considered among the artists associated with what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among his contemporaries were artists including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Warwick Goble, Kay Nielsen, Maxfield Parrish, Dugald Stewart Walker and Willy Pogany. Born in Dublin, Bull embarked on what was to be a varied artistic career after meeting the French satirist and political cartoonist Caran d'Ache (the pseudonym of Emmanuel Poiré) in Paris. Bull contributed sketches and political cartoons to a variety of publications throughout his career and developed further artistic influences following his travels to the Middle East. That personal experience allowed Bull to incorporate expert detail into those illustrations with Oriental themes. His major works include: The Arabian Nights (1912), Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (1913), A Garland of Rose's (1928), and The Arabian Nights (1930). ---------- Return Policy---------- If you are unsatisfied with your purchase for any reason, a FULL refund will be issued so long as I am notified within 14 days after you recieve your purchase.
