Caught Up “Herein lie two of the most pivotal albums in the career of soul-turned-gospel star Candi Staton. Making their CD debut here, the two projects remain Staton’s bestselling gospel projects to date. When Staton left the secular field in 1982, she only left the lyrics about cheating men and motel romps behind. “I kept the rhythm," she grins. Staton's third gospel project - 1986’s Sing A Song LP was her most contemporary gospel album up to that time. Staton’s prowess as a songwriter continued to improve as she crafted firm hooks, contemporary rhythms and passionate, uncompromising evangelistic lyrics. Having pulled herself out of the financial hole she fell Into after she left secular music and turned down lucrative club dates, Staton was by this point able to hire the best musicians for her recording sessions. She brought in legendary session man Ernie Watts, who had played with everyone from Quincy Jones and Barbra Streisand to B.B. King, to play sax. She also lassoed the McCrarys who had recorded their own album for Portrait Records and sang back-up on Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life LP. All of these elements coalesced to create a stunning album. In a December 1986 Tower Records’ Pulse! magazine review, Lee Hildebrand wrote: "One of the most emotion-charged of all soul singers...on Sing A Song...she brings great warmth and emotion to eight self-penned numbers. The production...is contemporary and makes full use of strings, horns and background vocals, yet retains much of the distinctive Southern soul quality that was associated with Staton’s ’Muscle Shoals' secular period." Different elements of the album were recorded at four studios across the country. Staton offered upbeat inspirational numbers such as "Sing A Song,” "Have You Tried God," "God's Got It" and "It’s Not Easy." There was the traditional-styled "The First Face I Want to See," which was the lead radio hit from the project. A handful of southern gospel radio stations played the subtly Southern "To Glorify Your Name" while another handful of middle of the road (MOR) stations played the popish "He Is Lord." The album closed with a nice, smooth mid-tempo song, "He’s Coming Back." The McCrarys created a studio choir effect as Staton led the song in an earthy congregational style. "They almost tried to run me out of the church with that album," Staton recalls. "They weren't used to that kind of contemporary music at the time. Those songs seem tame when you listen to them now, but at the time they were scandalous just because of the instruments we used and the urban styling of the songs. There was no Kirk Franklin and BeBe & CeCe Winans at that time, so I really helped blaze that trail for contemporary music in the black church. I got tarred and feathered so it wasn’t as bad for the others that came behind me." While some traditionalists balked at the secular grooves, it sold an easy 50,000 copies and peaked at #7 on the Billboard gospel charts. It’s success was due in large part to Staton making the constant rounds of Christian television talk shows (Jim & Tammy’s PTL Club, Oral Roberts, Robert Tilton, The 700 Club, among others) instead of gospel radio play, which was not very open to contemporary music at the time. In spite of the strong sales. Staton wanted a radio hit. For her fourth LP, Love Lifted Me, Staton decided to record the kind of project that gospel retailers and others told her she should have made all along: a completely traditional gospel album of hymns. She searched the recesses of her mind for songs she heard as a child when she toured with the Jewel Gospel Trio in the 1950s. She picked eight church standards such as “Love Lifted Me,” "Highway to Heaven" and “Uncloudy Day.” The only new composition was a song Staton wrote about the Rapture entitled "Caught Up." She sang them all in an authentic, down-to-earth, no frills, backwoods style one could hear on any Sunday morning. She brought in the Richard Smallwood Singers to handle the background vocals and she arranged the songs to fit her sermonette style of delivering a song with her personal testimony woven through it for added impact. Gospel radio embraced the project with both arms and ears in 1988. In addition, Staton’s Beracah Records label worked a deal with Black Entertainment Television (BET) to run sixty-second commercial spots that helped the project sell well over 100,000 units and make it Staton's bestselling gospel project yet. The LP reached #13 on Billboard's gospel chart but sold half of its units through the television campaign. Now, this LP and Sing A Song are finally on the market again and how sweet it Is.
