ILLUSTRATOR BIO: Hal Coffman, Harold Roberto “Hal” Coffman was born in Los Angeles, California on January 3, 1883, according to his World War I draft card. Coffman was a jack of all trades with Hearst Newspapers, supplying large Sunday editorial cartoons (spelling McCay), weekday news and social cartoons, story illustrations, sports cartoons, you name it. Coffman had a long career, at least into the 1940s, but he was never particularly comfortable with series comic strips. The few he did were short-lived. WHERE I GOT IT: A family member's personal collection. Most collected during the 1990s via mail-order Hakes auctions (before internet selling platforms). ADDITIONAL INFO: There are more than 290 color and 170 black & white variations of these size buttons. These color pinbacks are made with lithographed paper illustrations and celluloid covering, die-cut and pressed together with a tin/metal button. The back has a no-hook pin with paper insert of cigarette brand and manufacturer: “FACTORY No. 649, 1st DIST. NY, THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO., PATENTED". Some have just ‘Whitehead & Hoag Co.’ with no cigarette branding. Issuing companies were Hassan, Tokio and Sweet Caporal Cigarettes, popular cigarette brands in the early 1900's. Buttons featured comics and characters illustrated by known and accomplished newspaper illustrators, cartoonists and contributors. These pinback buttons literally come from the dawning age of American comics and where they evolved. These illustrators were the pioneers who began the comic industry that it has become. Contributing artists include: Harry "Bud" Fisher (famous for "Mutt and Jeff" comics), "TAD" (Thomas Aloysius Dorgan) and R.L. "Rube" Goldberg, George McManus, Hal Coffman, "TEP" (Thomas E. Powers), Gus Mager, Tom McNamara (film director), George Herriman (famous for "Krazy Kat" comics) Rudolph Dirks (famous for "The Katzenjammer Kids" comics), HBM and C.M. Payne. Some pinbacks have the same slogan but with different comics, colors and illustrators.
