Description: Beautiful historic New Orleans roofing slate featuring Cafe Du Monde. These slates were mined in Pennsylvania and floated down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers on rafts. They were used as roofing material after the disastrous fire which occurred on Good Friday March 21, 1788. Each was individually hand shaped. This one came from an old building in New Orleans. Café Du Monde is the original French Market coffee stand, located on the banks of the Mississippi river across from Jackson Square. The renowned café au lait is made with a special blend of coffee and chicory, mixed half-and-half with hot milk. Chicory a root of the endive plant, is roasted, ground and mixed with the freshly ground coffee. It smooths the bitter edge of the dark roast, leaving a slight taste of chocolate. Beignets, the puffy square French donuts are served, hot and covered with powdered sugar. Known worldwide as the taste of New Orleans.
