Description: c1882 – THE POETICAL WORKS OF SIR WALTER SCOTT Antiquarian Book CHANDOS CLASSICS c1882 – THE POETICAL WORKS OF SIR WALTER SCOTT Antiquarian Hardback Book – Part of ‘The Chandos Classics. With a DECORATIVE cloth binding, with gilt stamps on the spine, blue pastedowns and endpapers, an introduction and notes, and the publisher’s catalogue printed on the pastedowns and endpapers. This is a new edition. Published by Frederick Warne And Co., Bedford Street, Strand, London and printed by Clay And Taylor, Printers, Bungay, England. This book is not dated; however, I believe it to date to between 1865 and 1882. The publisher, Frederick Warne, was founded in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London in 1865 and so the book must date to after this. In the publisher’s catalogue, on the back free endpaper, the date of 1867 is mentioned, and so it must date after this. On the reverse of the front free endpaper there is a pen inscription which is dated ‘1882’ and so the book must date to 1882 or earlier. I believe, therefore that this book dates between 1867 and 1882. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a renowned Scottish poet, novelist, playwright, and historian. He is considered one of the most influential literary figures of the early 19th century and played a significant role in the development and popularisation of the historical novel genre. He gained early recognition as a poet with works such as "The Lay of the Last Minstrel" (1805) and "Marmion" (1808), which were highly successful and established his reputation as a talented poet. Both poems are included in this book. Scott's poetic works were known for their romantic themes, vivid imagery, and use of Scottish folklore and history. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A PRINTING ERROR IN THIS VOLUME. The page numbers are not in order between pages 352 and 369 and PAGES 353 TO 368 ARE MISSING. After page 352 the pages 337 to 352 repeat themselves (but not in order), and the next page is 369, and then the order returns to normal. This is an error which obviously occurred in the making of this book, but it has been reflected in the price. This is bound in the publisher’s original red cloth, over boards, decorated in gilt and black illustrations and lettering on the spine and black decorations and lettering on the front board. There are embossed decorations on the back board. The cover is intact, robust and in a very good condition for a book which is over 140 years old. However, there is some wear to the cover, expected from a book of this age. This includes bumping to the corners, discolouration, small or light marks on the cloth, fading on the spine, and some very small rips to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine. Please see the photographs provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent for a book of this age. There is light foxing on the pastedowns, endpapers, and half title page. Besides this, the pages are in an overall very clean and neat state, and predominantly uncreased. There is only the very occasional very small folds, creases, or small marks. None of these affect the text. Some of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. This has left the occasional very small rip to the page edges, and there are a handful of further pages with very small rips at their edges, including inner edge. These are all minimal and do not obscure the text. Other than the afore mentioned pen inscription, dated 1882, there is no further pen or pencil written inside this book. The pages are mostly tightly bound, and there is just a light crack in the gutter between a few pages. However, all the pages are secure. There are no loose pages. Besides the page error after page 352, mentioned above, there are no further missing pages. There are 629 pages of text, plus 2 pages containing the publisher’s catalogue at the rear. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This measures approximately 18.7 cm by 13 cm and 3.1 cm wide. It weighs approximately 431 grams. Thank you for looking.
