Description: For sale is a wonderful circa 1915 oil painting by the highly regarded English sporting and animal artist Philip Eustace Stretton (1863 1930) Highly regarded for his portraits of animals, and in particular dogs, Stretton captures here in this painting two beautiful bloodhound dogs resting after probably an outing in the woods or the field. They are resting in a large room with fireplace hearth and presumably their masters sitting chair. The nearly empty water dish suggests they have both quenched their thirst and are ready for rest. One dog lays down curled up while his partner sits attentively over top of him. Both dogs are captured gazing back at the viewer. Stretton does an exceptional job capturing the character and moods of each dog here. The brush strokes are loose and whispy suggesting this may be a study for a larger painting on canvas. But we are uncertain. This painting is oil on an academy board type material. Framed in a Circa 1940’s frame which is not original. The frame however is a very appropriate frame for the painting. A finer English frame would be a wonderful addition. Condition: Overall good. Slight warp to the painting but lays relatively flat in the frame with foamcore backer board as pictured. Normal age appropriate surface craquelure that we have detailed in our pictures (see pictures). No chips or paint loss. Please ask any additional questions regarding this painting prior to purchase should you have any.
