BRET HARTE CABIN ~ ANGELES CAMP ~ JACKASS HILL~C-1950

Description: Early original black & white Polaroid photograph of the BRET HARTE CABINS. View shows a couple visiting the cabins which are located just outside Angels Camp in the California Gold Country northeast of San Francisco. Sign at top of building reads, “BRET HARTE CABINS” and another sign below reads, “OCCUPIED BY BRET HARTE - BUILT IN 1853”. Bret Harte was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. He arrived in the Gold Country around 1853 when he was only nineteen, but the initial thrust of the Gold Rush was reaching retirement age by that year. Many of the mining camps were disbanding. Bret Harte mined sporadically throughout the Southern Mines, moving as far north as Angels Camp. He eventually wound up at the Gillis Brothers' cabin on Jackass Hill a few miles south of town. Strapped for cash and longing to return to his family in Oakland, Bret Harte's stagecoach passage home was paid for by the kindly Gillis family. Harte left the goldfields and never returned. Although the harsh life of the gold camps was not for him, during the short time he spent there, Harte accumulated enough material and first hand experience to last his literary career. Stories such as The Luck of Roaring Camp, Mûliss, and Outcasts of Poker Flat gave the world a unique view of the western frontier and are still in print today. Photograph measures 3 x 4 inches and is in good condition with no bends, tears, or creases but a 1 inch diagonal thin developer stain through left part of cabin (see scan). The image is very sharp and has strong tones with great contrast and clarity. Back is clean with no writing. Please email with any questions and please "VIEW SELLERS OTHER ITEMS". Thanks.
