Description: This beautiful handwoven silk Kira is a stunning piece of art that showcases the intricate weaving skills of Bhutanese women. The Kira is a floor-length dress and is wrapped and fastened at the shoulders with beautiful silver brooches called "Koma". They are often accompanied by a short jacket called the "Tego". The large work features three woven panels stitched together for a total length of 110 inches and a width of 52 inches of fabric. This garment or Kira is made of silk on silk in a design using ethnic patterns interspersed with stripes, all with vegetable dyes in colors of gold, wine red, green and ecru. The designs, patterns, and colors of the Kira often carry symbolic meanings deeply rooted in Bhutanese traditions. These symbols may represent aspects of nature, spirituality, and folklore, adding layers of significance to the clothing beyond their aesthetic appeal. The ends of the fabric are fringed and it is soft and drapes beautifully. It is in very good condition for the age with a few loose threads here and there that could be expected with the age. There is also a black line or streak near the bottom of one side that I only notice when I looked over the photos. It can be seen in the final closeup photo. This antique fabric was acquired during travel to Bhutan. It would be perfect for anyone who appreciates rare woven ethnic art.. Add this beautiful piece to your collection today!
