Description: Such a pretty thing! Lovely copy of the 1895 (approx,) printing of this classic by Scottish author John Watson, writing under the pen name Ian MaClaren, in excellent condition for its age. Brown binding with front cover and spine very prettily silver gilt embossed with title and design; wear to gilding as shown. Binding is tight and square; some bumps & wear to corners and edges as shown and as expected in a volume of this age. No loose or missing pages; very light foxing to pages; very slight cracking evident on back hinge; bookplate and inscription by previous owners. It is thought that Maclaren was the original source of the quotation "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle," now widely misattributed to Plato. The oldest known instance of this quotation is in the 1897 Christmas edition of The British Weekly, penned by Maclaren: "Be pitiful, for every man is fighting a hard battle."
