Before Sunrise is a 1995 romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The film follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American man, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know and falling in love with each other. The plot is considered minimalistic, as not much happens aside from walking and talking. The two characters' ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed. Jesse is a romantic disguised as a cynic, and Céline is seemingly a romantic, albeit with some doubts. Taking place over the course of one night, their limited time together is always on their minds, and leads to each revealing a lot about themselves partly because they both initially believe they will never see each other again. Before Sunrise premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 1995, and was released theatrically eight days later; grossing $5.5 million against a $2.5 million budget. Critics praised the performances of Hawke and Delpy, and the film received a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Jesse and Céline later make an appearance in Linklater's 2001 film Waking Life. A 2004 sequel, Before Sunset, picks up the story nine years after the events of the first film, and a 2013 sequel, Before Midnight, picks it up again a further nine years later. The film was entered into the 45th Berlin International Film Festival where Linklater won the Silver Bear for Best Director. The review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 100% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 43 reviews, with an average rating of 8.32/10. The site's critics consensus reads, "Thought-provoking and beautifully filmed, Before Sunrise is an intelligent, unabashedly romantic look at modern love, led by marvelously natural performances from Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 77 out of 100 based on 18 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade B on scale of A to F. Film critic Roger Ebert gave Before Sunrise three out of four and described Delpy as "ravishingly beautiful and, more important, warm and matter-of-fact, speaking English so well the screenplay has to explain it (she spent some time in the States)". In her review for The New York Times, Janet Maslin wrote, "Before Sunrise is as uneven as any marathon conversation might be, combining colorful, disarming insights with periodic lulls. The film maker clearly wants things this way, with both these young characters trying on ideas and attitudes as if they were new clothes". Hal Hinson, in his review for The Washington Post wrote, "Before Sunrise is not a big movie, or one with big ideas, but it is a cut above the banal twentysomething love stories you usually see at the movies. This one, at least, treats young people as real people". In his review for the Los Angeles Times, Peter Rainer wrote, "It's an attempt to make a mainstream youth movie with a bit more feeling and mysteriousness than most, and, in this, it succeeds". Marjorie Baumgarten, in her review for The Austin Chronicle, wrote, "Before Sunrise represents a maturation of Linklater's work in terms of its themes and choice of characters". In his review for The New Yorker, Anthony Lane wrote, "Just once, for a single day, Jesse and Céline have given life the sort of shape and charge that until now they have found only in fiction, and may never find again". Entertainment Weekly gave the film an "A-" rating and Owen Gleiberman wrote, "Small movies can be as daring as big ones, and Linklater, in his offhand way, is working without a net here. Before Sunrise may be the closest an American has come to the discursive talk gamesmanship of Eric Rohmer". Online film critic James Berardinelli has cited the film as "the best romance of all time". In a 2008 Empire poll, Before Sunrise was ranked as the 200th greatest movie of all time. In 2010 British newspaper The Guardian ranked Before Sunrise/Before Sunset #3 on their critics' list of 25 best romantic films of all time, and #2 in an online readers' poll.Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as two young people who meet and whose lives are forever changed on a train from Budapest to Paris. They may have only one night, but when soul mates find each other, anything can happen Before Sunrise. A heartbroken young Texas journalist meets a beautiful French student on a train bound for Paris, and invites her to share his last night in Vienna. Richard Linklater made a fine comedy in "Dazed and Confused", but his strongest, most mature effort remains as "Before Sunrise". It's also one of Ethan Hawke's best roles. He stars as Jesse, a young American who is generally seeing the sites with a Eurorail pass, trying to decide where to go next with his life. While riding the train, he meets up with Celine (the wonderful Julie Delpy). The two talk about life, death, society, but soon Jesse finds that he's reached his destination in Vienna. Thinking that he'll never have a chance or see her again, he decides to ask her if she wants to get off the train and walk around with him in Vienna. What follows is one of the more charming character tales of the past few years. There really is no structure or much plot, just the pleasure of listening to these two people sharing their beliefs, secrets, joys and other tales of their life. Hawke and Delpy are cute together and have fine chemistry - you believe that they're falling in love as they're talking, and as day becomes night. It's a smart, funny, sad movie that really captures love in a way that few movies have been able to. It's the best effort from director Linklater. Although Hawke's best role remains as "Gattaca", this is certainly a fine performance as well. As in life, characters in Before Sunrise are defined by their conversations. Jesse and Celine talk about philosophy, religion, love and life. They tell each other jokes, share experiences and discuss their hopes and fears. Along the way they encounter a number of unique individuals who offer moments of insight and act as 'delusion angels' (a term coined by a poet they meet), visiting and enriching the couple's romance. Before Sunrise must have been a great challenge for everyone involved in the production. It's a heavily dialogue driven film featuring a script longer than a dozen Armageddons or Batman and Robins. The entire film is shot on location in Vienna giving it a 'stolen' feel. Simple camera setups lend to an enhanced feeling of realism. Long, dialogue heavy takes require exacting work from the actors and the result is outstanding. The bulk of the credit for Before Sunrise's success has to go to Hawke and Delpy. The two deliver stunning performances, bringing to life conversations that show the depth of their character and that will ring true to anyone who's ever fallen in love. In the hands of lesser actors this film could have become tedious very quickly but Hawke and Delpy are so charming and believable that one can't help but hang on their every word.
