Description: For sale is a beautiful Antique 19th Century maritime oil painting on board. The painting depicts two sail boats battling the waves near a dramatic ocean side cliff. You can see a lighthouse (or a dwelling) right above the cliff. The far mountain has some evening light casting on its peak, but the detail is blurred by the mist and sea foams in the atmosphere. The technique of this painting is superb! The raging waves add to the dramatic display of the pure white sails. The reverse side shows that the painting is directly done on board, very aged patina, true to the 1800s period. The frame measures approximately 24” by 15”. The painting is in great condition considering its age. No major paint losses or cracks. Age appropriate surface wears and minor imperfections is to be expected, but nothing too noticeable. The gesso frame is original. It is very thick and pronounced, a good match with the dramatic scenery. Please see all photos (and zoom in) for detail.
