Excluded from the Louisiana Purchase, this area left these pioneers as subjects of West Florida under Spanish rule. Local leader Philemon Thomas organized a rebellion, with Joseph Thomas leading the militia to capture Fort San Carlos from Spanish control. At dawn on September 23, 1810, the rebels stormed the fort, quickly overpowering and killing several Spanish soldiers. Their victory established the short-lived Republic of West Florida, which lasted 74 days.
