This book by Glenn Anthony May provides a fascinating account of what life was like for the soldiers and civilians in Batangas during that war. Challenging established scholarship, it also shows that the backbone of Philippine resistance was the political and economic elites rather than the peasantry, as is commonly supposed. --------------Using not only official records but also diaries, letters, and reminiscences, May gives us a revealing view of the U.S. soldiers who occupied the province, the guerrillas who opposed them, and the noncombatants who interacted daily with both armies. He demonstrates that in this war, as in the earlier Philippine revolution of 1896 against Spanish rule, the war effort was fueled and directed by elite Batanguenos who provided money, food, and other assistance to the Filipino fighting men. May considers the effects of old boy networks, family connections, patron - client bonds, municipal politics, and religious beliefs on the local resistance activities. Reevaluating the behavior of the Americans in the war, he argues that it was neither as unpleasant nor as praiseworthy as it has thus far been portrayed. Although the Americana were guilty of atrocities and lesser abuses, says May, most American troops had relatively civil relations with the Filipino population, and the massive depopulation of Batangas was due as much to preexisting epidemiological conditions as to the policies of the American army of occupation. New Terms ************************************************************ THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS. INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE NOTICE ! AS OF MAY 14th, 2007, THE US POSTAL SYSTEM HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED INTERNATIONAL MAIL RATES - ALL SURFACE MAIL HAS BEEN DROPPED, THERE WILL ONLY BE TWO CLASSES OF AIR MAIL= PRIORITY OR FIRST CLASS. Due to increasingly higher U.S. postal rates, and the many packages that we have lost or damaged, on International Mail, we now only will ship internationally via E-Bay’s Global shipping program, which goes by courier services. Although expensive, many times they are cheaper than what I could send it for by US Mail – and much more secure. Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts". U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE.
