Avram Davidson was born in 1923 in Yonkers, New York and he died in 1993 in Bremerton, Washington. He served as a Navy hospital corpsman (a medic0 with the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He started his writing career as a Talmudic scholar around 1950 and was married in a Jewish wedding to Grania Kalman in 1962. The wedding took place at the home of Damon Knight, the great and famous science fiction writer, editor, and critic. He converted to the Japanese religion of Tenrikyuo during the 1970’s. He was a member of the Swordsmen and Sorcerers’ Guild of America, a loose-knit group of Heroic Fantasy authors founded in the 1960’s. Davidson first became somewhat famous when many of his stories of fiction were published by the science fiction/fantasy magazines of the day. His best-known works are his novels about Vergil Magus, the magician that medieval legend made out of the Roman poet Virgil, the Peregrine novels, a comic view of Europe shortly after the fall of Rome, the Jack Limekiller stories, and the Dr. Eszterhazy, a sort of more erudite Sherlock Holmes-like figure. Davidson wrote science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, and some stories that defy classification. Davidson was the author of such excellent books as ROGUE DRAGON, THE KAR-CHEE REIGN, THE PHOENIX AND THE MIRROR, VERGIL IN AVERNO (offered here), THE SCARLET FIG, PEREGRINE: PRIMUS, PEREGRINE: SECUNDUS, MUTINY IN SPACE, RORK!, MASTER OF THE MAZE, CLASH OF STAR-KINGS, THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY, JOYLEG (co-written with Ward Moore), OR ALL THE SEAS WITH OYSTERS, STRANGE SEAS AND SHORES, THE ADVENTURES OF DOCTOR ESZTERHAZY, and a number of others. Signed by Avram Davidson on the title page. Clearly Avram Davidson was (and remains) one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible science fiction and fantasy authors of all time. Signed by Avram Davidson on the title page. From the dust jacket: “ . . . VERGIL IN AVERNO/AVRAM DAVIDSON . . . Now Vergil Magus, the powerful sorcerer-poet, returns in the long-awaited sequel to Avram Davidson’s bestselling novel of fable and magic, THE PHOENIX AND THE MIRROR. Here, Vergil’s extraordinary adventures continue as he journeys into the hideous heart of evil and darkness . . . Enter the Very Rich City of Averno and discover a place of untold riches and untamed lusts, of orgies and drunken revelries, of madness and human corruption. Here is a decaying metropolis of wizards and warlocks, where old crones spin webs of cruelty and deceit, and hell lurks in a labyrinth of underworld caves. Vergil has come to Averno to uncover the secret of its eternal fires, the very center of its wealth and prominence. But as he explores the inner sancta of this ancient and heartless inferno, he finds, too, the fiery bed of Poppaea, the beautiful wife of one of the city’s most influential Magnates. With this forbidden pleasure, comes forbidden knowledge, and Vergil is drawn into a web of intrigue that threatens to turn the terrible powers of Averno against him . . . For centuries, the lords of the city have thrived on the bloody sacrifice of their own people. Now they are determined to add one more name to the scrolls of Averno’s dead . . . and to cast Vergil, now an outlaw into the burning pits of the dying empire . . . “ From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “ . . . A man stood in the light and shadow beneath the arch. A figure brutal, strong, and coarse, he had the broad, blunt face of a gladiator . . . ‘Borbo is his name,’ said the beadle. ‘A butcher is what he is. He stuns the oxen. And when they stumble, then he plunges in the knife.’ And then Vergil saw the knife. And then Vergil heard the voice, dimly and out of the darkness. It was saying: ‘ . . . one Vergil, a wizard, sorcerer, nigroment and necromant. From him the protection of the Laws and the Magnates of the Very Rich City is withdrawn, and he is proclaimed Outlaw. He may be duped, drugged, poisoned, strangled, drawn, or stoned; he may be poignarded, bludgeoned, thrust through, or cast down. It be licit that he be burned or bled or hamstrung or handed,’ and so the dreadful list, like a litany, ran on and on . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . Avram Davidson is considered a master of genre short fiction. His unique and colorful style has won him a wide following, as well as the coveted Hugo and the Mystery Writers of America awards. He is also the recipient of the first World Fantasy Award for Short Stories. His previous novels include PERIGRINE: PRIMUS, ROGUE DRAGON, and THE ISLAND UNDER THE EARTH. He lives in Washington State . . . “ As Avram Davidson himself has been quoted about VERGIL IN AVERNO: “Far from being ‘The sequel to THE PHOENIX AND THE MIRROR’ this book is likelier a prequel to a prequel of THE PHOENIX AND THE MIRROR, both forming parts of that trinity of trilogies, ‘The Ennead of Vergil Magus.’ — AD _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. This may actually be an unread copy of this book. The book is tight and square in its white paper boards binding with black lettering on the spine of the book. There is no writing in the book (except for Avram Davidson’s autograph); no bookplates; no remainder marks (important in that this book sometimes shows up with Doubleday’s famous [infamous?] remainder spray). The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $12.95. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. Signed by Avram Davison on the title page. This is certainly a collector’s copy of this book and dust jacket. Quite scarce in this FINE/FINE condition; a great copy! A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-NOMINATED FANTASY 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AVRAM DAVIDSON 1st EDITIONS! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I’m not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
