Description: Ave Maria "The Annunciation" – Rudolf Bacher – 5 Sizes – Catholic Art Print In this fascinating Annunication painting, the artist, Rudolf Bacher, makes several unusual choices to startling effect. One, he chose red for Mary instead of blue, plus he made her a little older than artists usually do. That makes her look more queenly, and she is sitting on a throne-looking seat. As he is often shown, Gabriel approaches her gently and reverently, carrying the traditional symbol of purity, the lily. But what strikes us most about ths composition is the tone to their conversation. It is like the angel is consulting her, like they are arranging some of the details now that the long-awaited Mesiah is almost here. Mary has a tear in her eye, but she has gotten over her fear of the angel, as she was told to. Note also, the light is coming from behind the angel, like in the direction from which he might have come. Rudolf Bacher (Austrian, 1862-1945) painted mostly religiuos subjects early in his career, and then around age 30 because a professor of art at his alma mater, the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In his later career he did more portrit painting. This picture is his most famous one on the internet, in part because it sold recently.
