Description: Autograph note signed by Paul Laurence Dunbar Author: DUNBAR, Paul Laurence Title: Autograph note signed by Paul Laurence Dunbar Publication: [not published]: [undated, ca. 1900] Description: Small card, measuring just slightly larger than 3" x 2". Very slight indentation at lower margin from a paper clip, now perished, and there is some slight residue on the verso, suggesting that the card may have previously been tipped onto a book or scrapbook page. In near fine condition. The card contains a manuscript note from the first successful African-American poet, who was able to make a living from his writing. The note is a quotation, whose origin is unclear to us. It reads: "'There is Plenty of room for all our troubles in God's great Out-of-Doors.' Paul Laurence Dunbar." Documents signed by the poet have become quite scarce. Dunbar was thrust into stardom when his work was discovered and promoted by William Dean Howells in 1896, and had a prodigious poetic and literary output. However, Dunbar tragically died just a decade later from tuberculosis at age 33. A PSA/DNA letter of authenticity is laid-in. Near fine.
