Description: Measures 11.5" wide, 5" high. This comes from a scholar's large vintage collection containing both reproduction and original pieces, I will continue to list his historical pottery collection. This is an authentic polychromed Mayan dish designed to be used in Mayan ceremonies. For a short while, during the mid twentieth century these 'authentic' Mayan bowls were made by the Salvadoran people as they had been made centuries earlier. It is often nearly impossible for an amateur collector to distinguish these, now, fifty plus year old Mayan replicas from pieces many centuries older. Each was handmade slowly and each was unique. There was no assembly line production. Changes in the political climate at the end of the seventies and the nationalization of many industries also ended the production of these artifacts. Extremely few were made - even fewer remain and appear on the marketplace.
