The Year of the Ox Centuries ago, the Chinese invented a calendar based on the lunar (rather than the solar) cycle. There are twelve animals in the Chinese lunar zodiac, each corresponding in sequence to a year rather than a month. In 2009 we celebrate the Year of the Ox. According to tradition, people born during a Year of the Ox are said to exhibit that animal’s attributes. While everyone knows the saying "strong as an ox", the personality traits go much deeper than that. Ox personalities are tenacious, dependable, confident, patient, enduring, quiet, and systematic, with a kind, caring nature that enjoys helping others. They can be averse to risk, wary of new things, and stubborn at times. This is the second annual release in the new Lunar Series II zodiac program that began in 2008. Obverse A mother cow (a female ox) and her calf present a scene of supreme tranquility, standing in a field of grass with hills in the background. The legend YEAR OF THE OX defines the theme. The Chinese character for "Ox" is at the top, while the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark is judiciously placed to the left, near the 8:30 position along the rim. Reverse The reverse features Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl drop earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend 1 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity.
