Custom-Line Turnouts have blackened metal frogs that can be powered if necessary. As on other Atlas Customline Turnouts, the NEW Atlas Customline Mark V Turnouts are constructed so that regardless of switch point setting, both branches are powered. As a result, this new metal frog is insulated and carries no current. Most locos will span the insulated frog without loss of electrical pickup on the Customline Turnouts; However, engines with extremely short wheelbase or diesels with single truck pickup may hesitate or stall on the frog. The problem can easily be overcome by equipping turnouts with an Atlas Snap-Relay, item #200, (usually available from The Train Connection), which when wired to the remote switch machine, will energize the frog with track current of correct polarity depending on the switch point setting. What's the difference between Atlas HO code 100 & HO code 83 Track? Literally, the code of a piece of track is the height of the rail in thousandths of an inch (meaning code 83 rail is .083" high; code 100 rail is .100" high). The significant difference lies in the physical appearance of the two types of track.
