Description: Arthur Ullyett. Original Gelatin Chloride Sepia Photograph. Japanese Geisha. c. 1905-1910. Signed on back, with hand-written notes (to himself) on the proper display of a kimono. Dimensions: 5.5"" x 3.25" In VG antique condition and under protective plastic cover; no tears or issues. Early 20th century photo-journalist Arthur Ullyett dedicated his life to reporting and photographing discoveries made during world travels, and capturing as much culture and geography as he could. Born in 1865 in Ilford, England, his work was known for its raw and powerful imagery. He visited Japan shortly after the Russo-Japanese War ended, looking for stories. Accompanying one story, the accomplished photographer took this photo of a Japanese Geisha in her traditional kimono. He ultimately achieved his greatest public fame later in life for a series of photos taken when his travels brought him to St. Andrews, Scotland, the home of golf. Here, he would capture many of golf's luminaries such as Bobby Jones, Harry Vardon, and Francis Ouimet, while giving visibility to the journeys of many lesser heroes of the links, such as the trials of a one-armed golfer and the efforts of amateur ladies to gain entry.
