Description: Original 1928 photographic study of the commencement procession of a bullfight in Madrid. The photo is hand signed and dated in pencil by the photographer in the lower right margin and it is printed on heavy wove paper that bears a beautiful old Kodak/Paris gummed label on the reverse. The image measures 9 1/2 x 6 1/8 inches and with margins it measures 13 5/8 x 10 1/8 inches. Paper shows mild and even age toning and has some minor pressure dents in the surface, mostly in upper margin, otherwise in excellent condition. The photographer, Pop Momand, although a fine artist and photographer, is primarily known for his famous comic strip "Keeping up with the Joneses" and for bringing that iconic phrase into American pop culture. Arthur R. "Pop" Momand (1887-1987) spent his childhood in New York City, where he attended the Trinity School. Around 1906, Momand was hired as a staff artist for the New York World, where he produced a variety of comic strips. He also worked at The Evening Telegram, where he created the comic strip Pazaza. In 1908, Momand took a leave of absence and spent a year studying art at the Academie Julian in Paris. In 1910, he was married to May Harding, and they lived in Nassau County, Long Island in a rather upscale community. Unable to afford the Nassau County lifestyle, they eventually moved back to Manhattan, where in 1913, Momand created the comic strip, "Keeping Up with the Joneses", based on his Nassau County experiences. The comic was highly successful and was syndicated in many papers across the US until it was retired in 1938. Aside from his cartooning, Momond considered himself a fine artist and painted throughout his life, apparently, he had an interest in photography as well.
