Description: Archaios Numismatics __________________________________________ Description: Bronze Coin, Hemilitron or Hexonkion, of Himera in Sicily , Circa 425-409 BC. Obverse: Pan (or naked youth) riding a goat right, blowing conch shell and holding lagobolon, Helmet control symbol between legs of goat; Reverse: Nike flying left, wings open, holding aphlaston in extended right hand and with six pellets (mark of value) below outstretched hand; left hand holding up hem of chiton; [IMEPAIWN CCW around from lower left field] Mint: Syracuse, Sicily Size: 19 mm Weight: 3.4 g Ref: HGC 2, 474; Condition: Fine. Nice example of this interesting type. Weight light for type. Quite worn but key details are visible. HGC suggests rarity is merely C but this is certainly a type I don't see very often, I'd consider much more like R1. Use the Picture as your judge as grading is subjective. Notes: Himera, was an important ancient greek city on the north coast of Sicily at the mouth of the river of the same name (modern Grande) located between Panormus (modern Palermo) and Cephaloedium (modern Cefalù). The city was originally founded as an ancient Chalcidic colony from Zancle in the middle of the seventh century B.C. Its remains lie within the borders of the modern comune of Termini Imerese. Himera was the first Greek settlement on the north part of the island and was a strategic outpost just outside the eastern boundary of the Carthaginian-controlled west. Thucydides says it was the only Greek city on this coast of Sicily, which must however be understood with reference only to independent cities. Excerpts taken from Head Hist.
