Description: This is for an original April 1949 issue of Dell Sports Illustrated with Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau on the cover. This would be the third issue ever printed under this title.Lou’s career would begin as a star athlete at the University of Illinois where in 1936-1937 he would lead both the basketball and baseball teams to a Big 10 Conference Championship. In the 1937-1938 basketball season Lou would be named an NCAA All American. Lou would play from 1938 through 1950 with the Cleveland Indians and 1951 and 52 with the Boston Red Sox. Lou would be an 8 time All Star, 1944 batting champion and AL MVP in 1949. Lou was also player manager for the Indians from 1942 through 1950 which included winning the World Series in 1948. Lou is also the first manager to apply a shift when a hitter was up, although fans in the future wont know what a “shift” used to be. These oversized (10 ½ x 13 ½ ) are almost impossible to find in nice condition, but this one is exceptionally nice. Only 5 issues of these magazines were printed before Dell sold the rights to the Sports Illustrated which would start production in 1954, the magazine that most people are familiar with today. If you need a high grade example for your collection, this is the book for you. Great stories and photos make this a must have for any sports magazine collector, and the rarity and condition make it even better. Check out the scans and email with any questions.
