Description: This Bethlehem Traction Steel hoist rope tag was installed by Otis Elevator in Nov. 1960 in San Francisco, California. On the back the same tag is stamped RS (Re-shackled) 12 : 82 (month and year) FE Go (Fisher Elevator Co; believe they mistook the G for a C) and finally a 1 (not sure of its meaning, possibly 1st re-shackle.) On the front are two more "punches," one for standard cable and the other for the size and strength of the cable, 1/2" cable, 14,500 pounds of each one, usually there were 4 cables. The tag measures 2" X 3 1/2" and is made of a non-ferous metal, possibly tin. The re-shackling process (a California State Law) is required periodically (memory fails as to exact requirements) and varies by type of elevator. It involves securing the elevator so the cables can be cut off at the shackle, a threaded rod that bolts to the top of the elevator with an opening (socket) through which the elevator rope passes. The rope is turned back inside that socket and then a molten tin/lead mixture is poured into the socket so the cable cannot pull out. I gathered several tags, labels and name plates with the idea of making display plaques of the items for my boss as well as those I worked with in the trade. As it turned out, only made one for my boss sometime in the 1990's and stashed away the others until now and decided it was time to let go and give them new homes for others to enjoy. Look for others I have online.
