Description: Beautiful antique handpainted small lidded ginger jar by Royal Crown Derby, England. Made in Japanesque style, resembling satsuma wears of Japan, this rare and gorgeous piece features raised gilt details and scrolls and enameled floral details. It also has the original lid. Marked with makers mark and date symbol corresponding with circa 1887 production. It also has a retailer mark “Shreve Crump & Low” - Shreve, Crump & Low, a Boston, Massachusetts business, is the oldest purveyor of luxury goods in North America, responsible for trophies such as the Davis Cup and the Cy Young Award. Established in 1796 by watchmaker and silversmith John McFarlane, the company is one of the oldest jewelry stores in North America The jar is in very condition considering the age. The painted decorations are beautiful with minor wear. Some typical production/firing related imperfections. No chips or cracks noted on the bode, however THE LID HAS FAINT HAIRLINES (although not noticeable and the lid feels stable). Wear, minor scabs on the foot. Please see pictures for more details. Faint crazing I. A few areas, but mostly visible only when zoom in. It is very faint and small, typical for these wares. Measures 6.25” H With Japan opening to trade with Western world in mid 1800s, the demand for Japanese style porcelain and ceramics skyrocketed. Japanese “craze” swept through Europe and America with enormous demand for Japanese art and designs. Many makers copied and imitated Japanese wares. This small jar is a unique example of the styles from that era.
